Our country is teeming with rabbits.
These are estimated at 38 million in the UK and their population grows by around 2% per year .
That old maxim "breeding like rabbits " is still apt, as from six months old the female rabbit typically produces six different litters , each with five baby rabbits, all within one season. Half of their offspring will be females, who then , in turn, will breed within the same season.
That's a lot of rabbits!
DEFRA Estimates:
- Rabbits spend most time in wheat crops from November to May
- Average yield loss is 1% per rabbit per ha
- 100 rabbits on 10 hectare is 1 hectare LOST !
- Based on wheat at £162/ t ( Sept 2011) and average yield of 8.7 t/ha
- A potential £1263 in lost income
